Overview of the Abstract Categories

·         Breakout Session Oral Presentations: Sessions are scheduled Tuesday between 9:45 AM and 5 PM and Wednesday between 10:15 and 11:15 AM. Each session will consist of two presentations of 25 minutes each, with the remaining 10 minutes of the session dedicated to questions. Abstracts are reviewed and selected by Section organizers for a Section-sponsored breakout session, often grouped with others around a common theme.

·         Posters Presentations: Posters allow presenters to discuss their work with interested colleagues in an informal setting during the Grand Opening of Exhibits on Monday evening and during all scheduled breaks of the conference on Tuesday. Continuing education credits will not be offered for posters. Posters are typically displayed on 4’ x 6’ panels.

·         Student Oral Competition Presentations: Five students from a School of Public Health or related health science program are selected to compete for a $100 prize. To be considered for the competition, students should submit an abstract and check “student oral competition” on the abstract submission form. Students may only submit one abstract for consideration for the student oral competition. The student competition presentations can be on any public health topic and should be exactly 15 minutes each (questions for all student presenters will be taken after completion of all the presentations). The competition is scheduled for Wednesday morning of the meeting. Non-students may be co-authors but a student must be the first author and sole presenter. Submissions not selected for the competition can be considered for breakout and poster presentations, if the student selects those boxes on the abstract submission form.

Additional Information

·         Abstracts may be submitted for consideration for more than one presentation type.

·         Authors may submit multiple abstracts for consideration for breakout and poster sessions.

·         Students may only submit one abstract for consideration for the travel scholarship or oral competition, but they may submit additional abstracts in the other categories.

Student Travel Scholarship: Students in a School of Public Health or related health science program are eligible to compete for travel scholarships. Two to three students will be selected to be reimbursed up to $450 for travel.  To compete, upload a letter from your advisor/documentation from your school confirming you are a student in good standing and check “competing for student travel scholarship” on the abstract submission form. Only one abstract may be submitted for consideration for the travel scholarship. The abstract submitted for consideration may be submitted for any of the abstract categories.

TPHA Annual Education Conference!

TPHA Annual Education Conference Abstract Submission Guidelines:

1.            Provide all information requested on the Abstract Submission Form.

2.            Provide one learning objective that specifies your goal (include a verb) for attendees based on the presentation content. Example: By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to identify the three problems facing older adults in Tarrant County.

3.            The body of the abstract may not exceed 300 words and should include sections labeled: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions (section labels are not included in word count). Avoid abbreviations when possible. Tables, graphs, and charts are not permitted in abstracts. Citations are strongly discouraged.

4.            Abstracts will be reviewed for public health significance. Abstracts that do not clearly demonstrate public health significance will not be considered for presentation.

5.            Please indicate if work is in progress or completed. The work should not be in the pre-implementation phase.

6.            Please indicate which author(s) will present. Up to two speakers are allowed per breakout presentation, but must be identified at the time of abstract submission. Both speakers will be required to complete continuing education paperwork and register for the conference. A request for additional speakers will need to be discussed with the planning committee at the time of the abstract submission.

7.            If the work has been previously presented in any capacity, please indicate when and where and how this presentation will add to the body of public health knowledge.

8.            The quality of the submission will strongly affect the outcome of the review. TPHA may publish all or parts of the accepted abstracts in the Final Program for the 2018 Annual Educational Conference and the abstract information is exported directly from the submission without any edits or changes. To ensure publication accuracy, submitters (not TPHA) are responsible for submission accuracy and completeness.

9.            Abstracts must be submitted online by 11:59 PM Central Daylight Time on September 15, 2017. Late abstracts will not be accepted. All required information must be provided for an abstract to be considered.

10.        Decisions will be sent to abstract submitters by October 17, 2017.

11.        All presenters are responsible for their travel and lodging expenses, as well as registration fees for the conference.

12.        Presenters must be registered for the conference no later than the early-bird registration deadline of January 1, 2018.

13.        Meritorious abstract submissions from any category may be considered for publication in the TPHA Journal.

14.        If you experience problems or have questions about the abstract submission process, please email TPHA AEC program planners at tpha.aec.program@gmail.com .
