    EVIDENCE-BASED PUBLIC HEALTH:

A COURSE IN CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION

    AUSTIN, TX

    JULY 22ND – JULY 25TH, 2013

    J.J. Pickle Research Campus
The J. Neils Thompson Commons Building (#137)
10100 Burnet Road, Austin, TX 78758

With support from the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Section of the Texas Department of State Health Services in Austin, TX is hosting a 4-day course that focuses on seven specific content areas to improve public health practice.

These skills act as a framework for the course. The EBPH training addresses many of the core competencies for public health professionals adopted by various accrediting bodies. Through lectures, practice exercises, and case studies, the course takes a "hands-on" approach and emphasizes information that is readily available to busy practitioners.

    Background:

Developing effective programs and policies in chronic disease prevention requires specific skills, including the application of principles of scientific reasoning and systematic uses of data and information systems.  This process relies on several related disciplines, including epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral sciences, health care management, and health policy development.

Evidence-Based Public Health: A Course in Chronic Disease Prevention is a three and one-half-day course developed for public health practitioners.  It offers a comprehensive approach to program development and evaluation from a scientific perspective.  Highlighting the linkages between data systems and program/policy initiatives, participants will learn how to access and interpret existing data systems and methods of using data to impact specific policies or decision-makers.  The course takes a “hands-on” approach and emphasizes information that is readily available to busy practitioners.  It relies on problem-based learning and includes lectures, practice exercises, and case studies.  Participants will be expected to be actively engaged.

An overview of the approach being taken in the course can be found in the following book:

Brownson RC, Baker EA, Leet TL, Gillespie KN. Evidence-Based Public Health. New York: Oxford University Press; 2003.

    Target Audience:

Mid- to senior-level program managers in chronic disease prevention within state and territorial health agencies, particularly persons who use or could make better use of scientific evidence in making programmatic and health policy decisions.  Chronic disease directors, their deputy or assistant directors, and categorical program managers are the top priorities for this program. Formal training in epidemiology and/or biostatistics is not a requirement.  For persons with advanced training in public health disciplines, the course may help with a “train-the-trainer” approach
